Many European cities share the com-
mon problem of an increasing number
of cars consuming more and more
of our urban space. Car-Sharing has
shown its potential to help organise
mobility more efficiently, to regain
street space, and to improve the quali-
ty of urban life.
In Bremen 43 Car-Sharing locations
offers 130 cars for 5.500 clients,
German wide 160.000 people use the
innovative Car-Sharing system.

Most Car-Sharing operators have a
variety of cars in their fleets, allowing
you to choose the most appropriate
vehicle for any given journey. Fuel and
insurance costs are included in the ra-
tes, making the cost of every journey
highly transparent.

The public mobility station mobil.
punkt combines a Car-Sharing-station
on public street space with the offer of
Public Transport, with cycling and as
well taxi. The mobil.punkt reduces
parking traffic and offers information
and services for alternative modes.
The pay-as-you-drive principle and
related reduction of car-borne mileage
(shift to public transport, rail, cycling
and intermodal chains) and the availa-
bility of a variety of low-emission cars
lead to a reduction of emission and
noise.
With the help of Car-Sharing more than
1.000 private cars are replaced in Bremen.
This means that the costs for new parking
garages with an investment between 10
and 25 Mio. Euro are not necessary any
longer.
Two times Bremen was awarded by
European Vice-President for Transport
Jacques Barrot for innovative solutions
in the field of mobility management:
2005 Bremen was CIVITAS city; and
in 2007 Bremen achieved success with
the OSMOSE award. The implemented
concept of the intermodal mobil.punkt have
been also awarded in the competition
Improving air quality ensuring good mobility
in 2006. The competition has been
organised jointly by the German Motor Club
ADAC. The competition called in relation to
air quality management for intelligent
solution combining feasibility, efficiency,
cost-beneficial ration and sustainability. In
2008 the Bremen mobilpunkt was awarded
for a best practice example in cities by
The Federal Ministry of Transport, Building
and Urban Development.
As urban best practice example
Bremen was selected to take part to
the EXPO 2010 in Shanghai.
